High-current – Arc Entry Test

This test is performed in accordance with the latest version of IEC 61400-24 Annex D.3.2 and quantifies the extent of erosion damage to the potential lightning striking points. The test is carried out by sending a controlled charge, eventually combined with the lightning impulse current, into the test object via dedicated lightning striking points (receptors).

The test combines the impulse current in the first return stroke with the electrical charge in the long stroke. This makes it possible to determine the degree of erosion as a result of the current and charge that pass via an open arc into the lightning protection system.

By comparing the test results with the anticipated number of lightning strikes at a specific location, the manufacturer can define the service life of receptors and prescribe the optimal service and maintenance intervals.
